What Came Before
We are a small house of writers and researchers devoted to one question: what was here before?
Every building you pass was once an idea on a draughtsman's table — and before that, a lot owned by someone, a field grazed by someone else, a riverbank where something happened that nobody now remembers. Cities are layered like manuscripts scraped and rewritten. Before the Blueprint exists to read the earlier writing.
We publish histories at three scales. City histories follow a place across centuries. Building histories are biographies of a single structure, from the land beneath it to the people who lived and worked within. Event histories slow down a single day — a fire, a flood, an opening — and walk through it hour by hour.
Each title is published as an illustrated PDF eBook for reading anywhere, and you can read the first ten pages of every book free before you buy. Cloth-bound hardcover editions, made to last on a shelf for generations, are in preparation.
Our Principles
- Sources first. Every claim is traceable. Every book carries full notes and a bibliography.
- Ordinary people, too. Architects and mayors appear, but so do bricklayers, tenants and shopkeepers.
- Maps tell stories. Our books are built around period maps, plans and photographs.
- Made to last. Sewn bindings, archival paper, honest prices.
